Almost unaware of its outstanding quality, Don Edil Quinayas grew his coffee in the Huila region until 2022 on his 2-hectare farm at 1,950 m above sea level. In 2023, our partner importer (Semilla Coffee) shipped it to Europe because of its magnificent quality. The washed pink bourbon is super complex and impresses with its juicy sweet body, sparkling acidity and aromas of wild herbs, wild berries and grapefruit.

Quote from the producer

"Don Edil has been connected to coffee since his childhood when he worked as a picker at other farms while also working on the small lot his grandfather managed at a low altitude. It was always his dream from these early days that he would have his own coffee farm, so when he received these first parcels of land he planted subsistence crops in line with his Indigenous traditions, and with the land remaining, he planted 4000 Caturra trees. The Indigenous council has continued to work to achieve more lands and territories for the Jatun and in 2014, he was able to receive a third parcel of 2 hectares located at 1930 masl. At this time, the farm was only used for cattle but by 2016, he had heard of the variety Pink Bourbon and its fame for producing high quality and high volume at altitude. He and his wife Carmenza Urbano, alongside their children, planted 5000 Pink Bourbon trees in that year. These first years trying to raise the plants were difficult for them as the family had little money to invest in fertilizers or labor and so in these early days, the farm wasn’t well-managed. In many moments, Don Edil considered abandoning the farm but the desire to be a coffee grower kept him going until the crop began producing in 2019. From 2019 to 2022, Edil sold his coffees only on the local market in a style known as “en verde” which means the coffee is only collected, depulped, and then delivered to the local plaza to be sold to intermediaries for cash. This type of sale at best garners a grower 50% of the going market price, and often less. In mid-2022, Alberto Gaviria, a friend of the family who lives close to San Agustin began assisting Edil by helping drying his parchment in his solar dryer. Once dried, Alberto delivered some samples to a few different specialty buying points in San Agustin, where they received slightly improved prices but were always told that Edil’s coffee never achieved more than a 85 point score."
